Money Shame

What is Money Shame?

Money shaming is an internal feeling that you are bad with money in general. As opposed to telling yourself, “I made a mistake with my money,” you tell yourself, “I am bad with money” or “I am bad” overall.

By repeating these thoughts on a regular basis, you can cause yourself to go into a spiral of continuous bad money choices and think to yourself, “Well I know I’m bad with money anyway; this is just how I am!”

So how do you stop money shaming yourself?

Acknowledge It

Avoiding your spending habits and not facing them head-on won’t solve anything.

Positive Self-Talk

Be kind to yourself. You are not your money mistakes. Empowering yourself and moving on is the first step in the right direction.

Talk About It

Share what you’ve done. Let a friend know, “Hey, I made a mistake with my money. I need you to hold me accountable in the future.” Having support from those around you not only helps you but helps the other person to learn, as well.

Overall, don’t beat yourself up over mistakes you’ve made with money. No one is perfect. But if you need help, Vibe Credit Union is here for you. Get started at vibecreditunion.com.
