At Vibe, we believe leadership starts with compassion, connection, and a willingness to make a difference in the lives of others.
Through our annual scholarship program, we’re proud to recognize graduating Vibe members who are already creating meaningful impact within their communities while pursuing their educational goals.
Meet Lydia Binelli, one of our 2026 Vibe Scholarship recipients.
For Lydia, one small stuffed bear became the beginning of something much bigger.
When Lydia was young, her brother underwent lymph node surgery and returned home from the hospital with a stuffed bear. At the time, she did not fully understand the fear and uncertainty her family was experiencing, but she remembers how much comfort that bear brought to her brother during a difficult moment.
Over the years, “O Bear,” as the family affectionately named him, became more than a toy. He became part of countless childhood memories, adventures, and moments of comfort.
That memory stayed with Lydia.
Years later, while volunteering in the children’s surgery center at Corewell Health, Lydia noticed that many children played with toys during their hospital stay but left empty-handed once they were discharged. Watching families navigate those difficult moments reminded her of her own experience and inspired her to take action.
That inspiration became Bravery Bears.
After receiving an Acorn to Oak grant, Lydia launched the initiative to provide stuffed bears to children in the surgery center, each one paired with a message about resilience and courage. Through the program, she distributed 120 bears to young patients, hoping to offer the same comfort and sense of security her brother once experienced.
For Lydia, the impact goes far beyond the bears themselves.
She believes the smallest acts of kindness often become the moments people remember most. Whether through a thoughtful gesture, a comforting conversation, or simply showing compassion, Lydia strives to make every interaction meaningful.
Her experiences have inspired her future goal of pursuing pediatric medicine at the University of Michigan, where she hopes to continue supporting children and families during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
What makes Lydia’s story especially powerful is her belief that meaningful change does not always begin with grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with recognizing a need, taking initiative, and choosing to act with intention and empathy.
Through Bravery Bears and her commitment to serving others, Lydia continues to show how even the smallest moments of care can leave a lasting impact.
