Vibe Credit Union holds our members’ financial information and safety as high as all other aspects of their financial well-being. Hackers and fraudsters are resourceful, cunning, and prevalent. We are here to help our members to prevent falling victim to one of these scams!
Phishing
Phishing is a type of social engineering that involves a seemingly legitimate email or text message attempting to collect personal information such as passwords or account details. In most cases, it is best to disregard these communications, but what do you do if you are still concerned?
- Go directly to the source, but never use the contact information attached to the phishing communication.
- Only use P2P services (Cash App, Zelle, Venmo, etc.) to send money to people you know.
- Block known phishing attempts from future messaging in email or text form.
Social media
Keeping your social media network to only friends and family who you can verify is beneficial in protecting yourself and keeping the bad guys at bay, and understanding how easily any information posted on or passed through these venues is vital.
Always be mindful of what you are posting. Fraudsters often use social media to obtain and abuse information by commenting on seemingly innocent posts, “quizzing” you on your personal history, likes, and interests can provide a roadmap to your passwords.
Passwords
Ensuring your privacy and security settings are being used properly is the best way to protect yourself and starts with two simple steps:
Step 1: Utilize security features such as password requirements and multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Step 2: Implement privacy settings that only allow your friends to see what you post.
In-person transactions
What about protecting your information during in-person transactions? Always keep your Vibe ATM and debit card(s) in a safe place and know where they are at all times. If you notice one missing or out of place, contact the Credit Union immediately for the next mitigation steps. When using your ATM and debit card(s):
- Never lend your card and/or PIN to anyone else – even a family member for your benefit, and never write your PIN down,
- Never give your card number or PIN to anyone over the telephone, text, or email, remembering that Vibe will never ask for this information,
- Inspect ATMs and card readers for signs of tampering, and do not use them if it looks like anything is out of place or damaged,
- Be aware of your surroundings,
- Sign up for alerts on your account,
- Always review your statement for accuracy,
- Never share online banking information.
