EMV Vibe Cards

Enhanced Security with Chip Technology

Your security is important to us and we are excited to launch our new cards with chip technology. This advanced technology embeds your personal information within the chip and produces a single-use code to validate your transaction when making a purchase at a merchant with a chip card reader. This provides you with an added layer of security that will help prevent your information from being compromised if a merchant data breach should occur.

FAQs

Chip Technology Overview
What does EMV mean?
EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard®, and Visa®. These three companies originally developed chip technology.

Why is my card being upgraded to include chip technology?
Chip technology is becoming the standard in the U.S. and is already being used around the world to reduce fraud due to merchant data breaches. Your credit and debit cards will contain a small microchip on the front of your card. The chip will encrypt your personal information into a single-use unique code to validate your transaction when making a purchase at a merchant with a chip card reader.

How does the chip keep my information safe?
This advanced technology embeds your personal information within the chip to provide an added layer of security that will help prevent your information from being compromised if a merchant data breach should occur.

What is the significance of the October 1, 2015 fraud liability deadline?
The major U.S. credit card issuers imposed a deadline of October 1, 2015 for the liability to shift for plastic card fraud. If a financial institution has issued EMV chip cards and a merchant does not have an EMV chip card reader, the merchant is now responsible for the losses resulting from a data breach.

What is the significance of the October 1, 2017 deadlines?
  • Financial Institutions must issue EMV chip cards.
  • Merchants must install and activate the chip card readers.

Using My Chip Card
How do I know if a merchant’s chip card reader is chip enabled?
Most card readers will have instructions to either insert or swipe your card. If you are unsure, ask a store associate.

How do I use my chip card?
It’s easy to use your card with chip technology!
1.       Insert your card into the card reader with the chip facing up.
2.       Keep your card in the card reader and follow the prompts on the screen.
3.       Sign for your purchase and remove your card.

What if the merchant does not have a chip card reader?
You can still swipe your chip card by using the magnetic strip on the back at merchants without a chip card reader. If you are making a purchase over the phone or online, provide your card information as usual.
